  • Let me make myself clear a bit more: the words 'waiting to be explored' still pretends the natives didn't explore any of it. Of course they did. They were spread all over the continent, so how can anyone say the continent was still waiting to be explored? Typical arrogance of the conqueror, the one that writes the history.

  • In order to better understand colonization in the US and in the Americas in general, one must understand at least basic European history since the colonizers were from Europe. Many of the events (i.e. changes we see in this map) were the result of treaties, wars, payoffs (aka politics and economics) among the European powers during the Age of Exploration. Colonies meant power and prestige back home in Europe for these monarchies. Colonization was not just about escaping religious persecution!
