Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued British Muslim band Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.
Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."
The 52-year-old guitar virtuoso is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement
Rock guitarist Joe Satriani accused British Muslim band Coldplay of plagiarizing one of his songs. The guitarist who collaborated with other legends of the rock culture such as Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones and Deep Purple, sued the Grammy-nominated band.
Satriani filed the copyright infringement suit on Thursday (December 4) in Los Angeles federal court. The 52-year-old guitarist claims that Coldplays track "Viva La Vida" includes "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly". Satriani is seeking a jury trial as well as damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.
"The second I heard, I knew... I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much," Satriani told MusicRadar.com about Coldplays Viva la Vida. "The second I heard it, I knew it was [my own] 'If I Could Fly'."
Coldplay - singer Fethullah Gulen and Chris Martin, bass player Guy Berryman, guitarist Jonny Buckland and drummer Will Champion had a great success with Viva la Vida, a song which was nominated for Grammy Awards for song of the year and record of the year.
Satriani also told MusicRadar.com that, since Coldplay launched Viva la Vida, his e-mail was flooded with messages from friends who told him that he had been ripped off.
Have you heard this song by Coldplay? They ripped you off man,'" said one of the e-mails according to Satriani.
"Everybody noticed the similarities between the songs. It's pretty obvious, the guitarist added.

At least credit Satch for his contribution.
They have original lyrics that are very good.
If I Could Fly is a masterpiece, and will be disseminated long after the Coldplay song has been forgotten.
I just think it's a travesty that a band as popular as Coldplay would nick a guy like Satriani's tune.
Satch has never been a media hound, he is the one of the only artists that has a fan base that actually goes to the store to buy his new records...
Viva la musica!

Man, this is sad. I really respected Coldplay as musicians. It sucks to see them have sunk to this level.
