your making alot of work for yourself doing it that way. cut it first to length then split it... every piece you split your increasing the amount of cuts you have to make by 4 and 8 times!

The splitter is constructed the wrong way. To maximize the action of the hydraulic ram the splitter head should split the wood in several stages and not at once making you need to apply more hydraulic power using more fuel. If the splitter is elongated and the splitting action happens in several stages you can split more wood faster, build the splitter of smaller gauge material saving you money.
