Song: Blodeuwedd
Artist: Damh The Bard
Album: Herne's Apprentice

Look into the water
Tell me what do you see
I see a woman of flowers
Crying out to be free

I see a Goddess
A woman
In a circle of trees

I see Math and Gwydion
Fall to their knees
Fall to their knees

Welcome the May Queen
Sing for her now
For as the year turns to Samhain
She'll return as an owl

Blodeuwedd the owl

Stand alone in the tower
Watch over your land
Hear the call of a hunter
Call him into your hands

He is dark, he is handsome
And the King is away
Gronw says he must go now
But you ask him to stay

Ask him to stay

Welcome the May Queen
Sing for her now
For as the year turns to Samhain
She'll return as an owl

Blodeuwedd the owl

She can't live without him
So while the King is away
They plot to kill him
In a year and a day

With a foot on a cauldron
A goat holds him true
By a fast running river
Came the spear from Gronw

And the eagle it flew

Welcome the May Queen
Sing for her now
For as the year turns to Samhain
She'll return as an owl

Blodeuwedd the owl

My son where are you
For only I see
An old rotting eagle
Upon an oak tree

Come to me young lion
And rest this night
For your wife is a bird now
She will never see light

Cursed to hunt in the night

Welcome the May Queen
Sing for her now
For as the year turns to Samhain
She'll return as an owl

Welcome the May Queen
Sing for her now
For as the year turns to Samhain
She'll return as an owl

Blodeuwedd the owl

  • @Thoroughbred419 Absolutely. First thing I heard as well.

  • Does anyone else hear threads of Nothing Else Matters in this song, I wonder if this wasn't used as inspiration for Metallica.... hmm

  • Why don't you go and see him live then? He'll be playing near Fulda on October 1, 2011.

  • @kingfisher559

    thank you for explaining. treehugs

  • can someone give me an introduction to Blodeuwedd please? who is Blodeuwedd ?

  • i like the lyrics

  • @acapae however, there are hardly any to none evidences that these stories are older than the first codex that contains them. I'm not saying that they can't be older, I'm just saying as long as we can't time travel, we can't know more than that they were written down in the Middle Ages and are at least that old.

And my main point is actually, that the character of Blodeuwedd, no matter when she was invented, is plainly fictional and not a reference to some ancient pagan goddess.

  • There was no mate good enough (if you like) for the rightful king, One was created for him. Unlike the Greek Pigmalion, or Galatia, this one was created especially for Llew Llaw, to love, but alas, she preferred his friend and rival. The Poet Robert Graves has a lot to say about her and her story. Even if it's become unpopular to credit Graves these days, we still cling the the interpretation he gave us. Aren't we smart?

  • @Garfielda89 Sleeping Beauty and the Swan Princess are characters in folk tales. Fairy tales and mythology are examples of different types of folk tales. How literally you choose to read them is a personal choice. Apart from those known to come from ancient civilisations, most folk tales are very old stories that were only formally written down and consolidated from the Mediaeval period onwards - this is not to say they were only created then however.

  • Please don't confuse Blodeuwedd with some sort of goddess or queen or something. She's a fictional character from the medieval Welsh literature. Nothing more or less. You could compare her to characters like Sleeping Beauty or the Swan Princess or something, just without the fairytale-part.
