He isn't crazy. I'm a teenager and I've seen how students treat the teachers. Hearing this story, I'm actually not surprised I don't hear more about things like that happening. Coincidentally, 2 years ago one of my teachers snapped like that too and threw a desk to a wall, although the school didn't find out and he didn't get fired.
