This is the actual version performed in the TV special version of Free to Be You and Me in 1974. Duet between Marlo Thomas and Harry Belafonte. Huge thanks to mooncrystle for uploading all 17 parts back in the day before getting suspended. You're the reason my family became so hopelessly in love with this musical television bonanza all over again.

Would anyone let their 6th grade son sing this in a school concert? My son is being told he'll get an F if he refuses to sing this as a duet with a girl in his grade.

Hmmm... well, I'd let my hypothetical son sing it. If I were in 6th Grade, I would've gladly sung it. Is the problem that it's focused in gender/sexuality constructs? Or... that 6th Grade is too young to sing songs as if they were husbands and wives? I'm confused. I don't know what the big deal is, personally. But if he doesn't want to, I think he should just get assigned something else to sing or do or whatever-have-you. You should ask to get him reassigned.

I think this would be the wrong song choice for a 6th grade concert. This is far beyond the level of an 11 year old. This is a bit of a childish song, one that would be similar to something that would be on Sesame Street. Not to say that it isn't a good song, it's just that kids of that age would feel kind of awkward singing it I think. It's certainly a wonderful song, especially for teaching kids gender equality. But I don't blame him for wanting to sing this song AS A DUET with a girl!
