43rd Street, near 13th Avenue

On a rainy Sunday, Sept 27, 2009, ill-appearing chickens being manhandled for grotesque and obscene ritual of Kapparot.
This abomination has to be banned. It is not mandated in the Talmud or in the Torah.
Please read Professor Richard's Schwartz's article on this brutal practice: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/kapparot.html
And please see recent article about it in an Israeli publication: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3780402,00.html

I have received many messages from people about how horrified and angry they are that this is going on. While I certainly agree, may I remind people that this - and FAR WORSE - occurs to animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses on a daily basis -- to tens of billions of animals per year. Just because it is out of the public's view (obviously with good reason, or else there would be more vegetarians), does NOT mean that it is not occurring. Whether you care to admit it to yourself or not, if you still eat meat and consume other animal products, you are DIRECTLY responsible for unimaginable suffering ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-513747926833909134# ).

People tend to forget that all animals - not just the ones they favor as "pets," feel pain, fear, and despair. I have met people who will dote over their dog or cat, and buy them expensive beds and toys, and then turn around and chow down on the carcass of a cow, pig, or chicken, and not think twice about it.

Now, I realize that (unfortunately), we, as a species, have the uncanny ability to rationalize and compartmentalize, but isn't this just a TAD hypocritical?

Its mind-boggling that in spite of overwhelming evidence that the consumption of animal products is directly responsible for a host of human diseases, greenhouse gas production and indescribable animal suffering, the general public continues to satiate its taste buds and support factory farming.
Instead of complaining about it, we need to examine and revise our own diets. A plant-based diet is better for human health, the environment and, obviously, the animals.
