Thanks for this historic recording!

Just listen to his sound... Without any comparison to someone else, it surely is admirable!!
Technique is very subjective at this level of piano playing so what matters to me is the ability of using the capabilities of "Pianoforte" in favour of the listener's ear pleasure. That, he does superbly! Unlike the race horses of today..
Thank you for the post!
Cheers!

Well, yes,on re-listening...It's not that i think it weak or poor; on the contrary, but it's still not what I like best about his very individual style(on careful listening, there are smudges, text changes in the chordal passages, but ,no matter..!). The marvel is still, for me, in the beautifully even and poetic trills, shapely phrasing even at rapid pace...that's rather what I love it for. Talk of "technik" always irritates me a little; it's so individual, and finally, the musical result counts most.

arguably this man's technique was superior to Rachmaninov's.

Ach.. takes me back to old Berlin. Magnifique, sir! Just the thing for a rainy sat night in nyc... thx old Beckmsr ..
"Big technik"is not an apt description for de Pachmann,as the end of this piece shows. He was simply unsuited to big chordal passages, but fantastic in filigree, lovely in lyric, deligtfully delicate... All this goes far beyond mere technik. Comparison with Rachmaninov is irrelevent.

I suggest that you listen again to the last seven measures of this polonaise. Pachmann's playing of what you describe as "big chordal passages" is as secure and effective as any pianist who would have recorded this work on an acoustic recording in 1915. The problem is that Pachmann is rather cautious playing the four measures preceding those final seven measures.
