For those of you who know Fred Mertz from "I Love Lucy" then you'll know he was a trend setter. He wore his pants just below his nipples. He was in a relationship with an actress named Patricia Barry just before he died. There are also countless stories about Frawley making lewd comments towards women (often misunderstood as "hating" women). A director on "My Three Sons" brought his wife to the set, Frawley, unknowing, told the director "I'd really like to **** her!" Needless to say it was quite an embarrassment.
He might have been with men every now and then, but he definitely maintained some attraction to the opposite sex.

I talked to a fellow years ago who worked in bath houses in both LA and San Francisco. According to him, yes, Frawley was gay. He said that Frawley had to be pretty drunk before he would go off with someone, and that he could get very nasty when it was all over. As for his being a womanizer, far from it! Frawley was known as being obnoxious to women. That's one of the reasons Vivian Vance hated him so much. I can't vouch for any of this, but I've heard other rumors as well.
