21 February: 30 minutes to relive history

As we commemorate the 21st of February this year, its not just about holding onto the past, but finding inspiration in ourselves and our own identity, remembering once again who we are, finding our pride. For many years we have been following the same rituals.

A group of people came close on the 21st of February in 1952 because, they believed in what they wanted, for themselves and for the country. They came together to stand against oppression. Their journey was not short, but it was the 30 minutes that afternoon, which decided their destiny and the fate of the nation and our language.

It was between 3:20 pm and 3:50 pm on 21st February 1952 that the youth stood together on the streets against the oppressors. And it was during those 30 minutes that the police opened fire without warning. It was the power of closeness in 30 minutes that made them stronger, determined and immovable.

Those 30 minutes also prompted the entire nation to come closer and their movement spread like wildfire throughout the country. It was the incident in those 30 minutes that was the trigger, the spark, the turning point. Eventually, we got a date - 21st February, a year - 1952, a language - Bangla, a nation - Bangladesh, and a moment now recognized as the International Mothers Language Day!

This February, lets spend 30 minutes remembering and commemorating the power of the 30 minutes of 1952 and use that time to remind us of who we are and what we can do, and remind ourselves of how we got here.
