This is a circa-1995 promo for "Afternoon Adventures", which was the second in Cartoon Network's long-running lineage of afternoon action blocks, which roughly went as follows:

"Super Adventures" (October 1, 1992 - 1995)
"Afternoon Adventures" (1995-1996)
"Power Zone" (1995-1996)
"Toonami" (March 17, 1997-April 16, 2004)
"Miguzi" (April 19, 2004-June 2007)

"Afternoon Adventures" replaced "Super Adventures" as the flagship afternoon action block on Cartoon Network sometime in mid-1995, while SA's Saturday late-night counterpart, "Super Adventure Saturdays". was re-branded as "Power Zone" in the Spring of 1995. (The "Power Zone" branding would later be recycled as the replacement for "Afternoon Adventures" in 1996.)

"Afternoon Adventures" scheduling appears to have fluctuated between 3:00PM- 7:00PM, but the initial lineup, announced in this promo, aired from 4:30PM-6:30PM and featured "James Bond Jr.", "Captain Planet & The Planeteers", "SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron" and "Jonny Quest".

Enjoy!

  • I remember a Godzilla and Fantastic Four cartoon airing on Cartoon Planet around this time, as well. Were they on this programming block?

  • @Shinmeiryu "Fantastic Four" and "Godzilla" had been airing alongside other '60's-'80's Hanna-Barbera/Ruby-Spears action cartoons in CN's earlier action block, "Super Adventures". Not sure if they were also aired on this block, but at the time they were airing on weekend afternoons on CN, in their "Super Adventures Saturdays" block.

CN later replaced "Afternoon Adventures" with "Power Zone" in 1996 I believe, and I definitely recall "Godzilla" airing on that one.

  • i guess this was what was the spiritual predessesor for toonami

  • Yes, it was. It was one of several predecessors to Toonami. Check out the video description if you want to learn more about them!
