WOW what a blast from the past! I well remember as a kid fighting bionically with other kids while trying to figure out "why" you had to run in slo-mo on camera to be running at super speeds in real life?? Ah the joys of being a kid! Yes in my time bionics were all the rage and we were all captivated by our bionic heroes on tv. Steve Austin was totally Mr Cool and all round good guy, but when Jamie Somers hit our screens it was a whole different ball game. Their love story also was a real talking point as they were pretty much THE fantasy couple of their time and sprouted a number of clever comedy send ups of which Benny Hill's "Bionic Baby" was probably most memorable for me. The Bionic movies that followed were great to enjoy and provided a much wider story line than were possible in an episode. Jamie Somer's ultimate rejection of her bionics and her subsequent death and her total memory loss of her relationship with Steve Austin was a clever twist on an old favourite and made for compelling viewing. But that was all fantasy of course ... remarkably today a good amount of bionics are readily being used every day in hospitals all around the world to replace missing limbs and defective sensors to the point where some of these bionics are actually superior to their human counterparts. Bionics go on to become a critical part in shaping our future and people look back and marvel at how these shows were so close to the mark ... This tv show was way more than just fantasy and while Steve Austin was tough and fair, Lindsay Wagner gave the role as the Bionic Woman a dramatically deeper level of realism that alot more people could relate to. You couln't beat Steve for bionic strength and the old good versus evil story line, but Lindsay did a remarkable job of bringing to the screen a bionic beauty that could make you laugh and cry and take you places no other bionic person had taken you before (sounds like a trailer I know ... :) My favourite Bionic Woman episode has Jamie pitted against the dooms day machine computer in an underground facility where she had to beat the many traps it's laid for any intruder and it becomes a war of minds as much as muscle. The whole world is about to be destroyed with only a few minutes to go and Jamie is repairing her broken bionics in a deadly race against time and machine. For me this was her role's defining moment as she too showed that she was much more than a machine and brought a whole new level to the bionic tv show concept that just wasn't possible with her male counterpart. So yes here we are, back in the 21st century surrounded by reality tv and forensic shows at every turn and volumetric marketing of old tv shows ... I think that says it all! So folks do yourself a huge favour and grab a dvd of the Bionic Woman and feel good again about watching tv and get control back over what you bring into your lives. You have to remember that all this was cutting edge and totally brand new back in it's day. They didn't have a model to work from or a history to copy, let alone the special effects we have today - but THAT was the whole beauty of it, what you say was a real prop effect. Sure the metal pipe bending was a prop and there were stunt doubles at every turn - but they were all real things - not "unreal" ones that only exist in a computer. Back then computers were used to enhance a story line, not replace it. The story lines written here explored the bionic reality and humanised the robotic machinery with tons of humour to break the cyborg theme up. My funniest Bionic Woman scene was when Jamie was rushing for visitors coming and she did the whole housework in about 5 minutes and even opened tin food with her bionic finger nail! Another one was when her students were harassing her as the new teacher until she calmly took a huge phone book and casually ripped it in half like a single page of paper while not blinking and asking all the students to treat each other with respect ... it's a killer scene! I'm really happy with the way her character developed and it's great contribution to the show. So folks sit back around the world and take five to step back to a time when tv shows had story line and a level of believability and left you inspired instead of assaulted as they do today. I'd love nothing better than to travel back in time with my Delorean time machine to visit this filming set to spend a day with this bionic beauty and watch her do her stuff - cause fellas of today I can tell you she really knows how to do her stuff! Lindsay was perfectly cast for the role with her own real life emotional parallels that have allowed her to go on and produce a mind bending folio of screen work that continues to this day. I hope you enjoy my video and thanks for watching! Cheers, Doc Braun :)
