What is between 5 to 6 stories high? Weighs between 4 to 5 tons? Topped off with a statue of an Roman Catholic saint and below it a 12 piece band playing Neapolitan folk songs carried on the shoulders of approximately 125 men through the streets of New York City every June 22nd where they stop to perform the dance of the giglio in front of a Roman Catholic Church?
In English this massive hand crafted wooden tower whose tradition dates back to 410 A.D. in Nola (Naple's) Italy is called a Lily (giglio) tower.
It is constructed by specialized craftsmen every year to honor the tireless humanitarian effort of the Roman Catholic Bishop and Poet of Nola, St. Paulinus in his effort to free those in slavery.
My 3-D sculpture Rocket Giglio of found objects is constructed of four wooden parchment wound scrolls to represent the four gospels of the New Testament.
A bronze menorah to represent the Old Testament and the wings of an air craft and statue of St. Paulinus wearing a 1960's style space helmet.
