this does not help if the person has to keep his head down to put it through the space. Stickhandling practice should be done with awareness as well.

Stickhandling is all about learning movement patterns. You are trying to create a permanent motor program in your master computer (the brain) so it becomes automatic and you don't have to think about it. In the early stages of learning, it's not important if the player is looking down at the ball or puck. As they get more proficient, eyes-up training is the next stage of development.
