I was introduced to this song by the choir director Matt Boyd at Christian Academy of Guatemala in Guatemala City when I student taught there in 2008. The song is powerful for a few reasons:
1. Powerful lyrics like "He saved my soul, He made me whole." I love it!
2. The quality of the choir is phenomenal. DFW Mass Choir is doing something right.
3. It was recorded in 1998, the recording quality is superb. The original drums, horns, and bass are excellent.

I hope my interpretation of it does gospel music justice. It is my first gospel style drum cover. Some Hezekiah Walker will be coming soon.
As a plug for my homemade headphones, they are regular earbuds with earmuff hearing protection around them. Room noise is not a factor, and crystal clear sound through the earbuds and the click track keep me on beat better than other methods I've used.

I also broke all of my 5A Pro-Mark nylon tip sticks. Bummer! When I want to play big and full, I use that heavier stick. So... for this video I used the nylon tip Vic Firth Peter Erskine "Ride Stick." I was worried I was going to break them the whole time, but they lasted!

  • Nice job! My name is Glenn Robertson, and I was the Drummer for the DFEW Mass Choir when we recorded I'd Rather Have Jesus. I didn't play the song at the recording. A good friend of mine Jeff Davis played on this track, but check the coverf and you will se my name. Great job, and I'm glad you like the song!

  • @oleschoolsnare Glenn, THANK YOU for commenting and saying hello! I really admire the work of your choir. Your music really encouraged me while I was overseas for 4 months. Thank you, and God bless! I'll be checking out your work, for sure.

  • great job sir, greetings from los angeles cali

  • @rsmarkster and greetings from Iowa! DFW choir is one of the best.

  • Keep up the good work MT. I like the song a lot but I never listened closely to the drums contribution to the tune until now.

  • @mzhart2010 thank you! I've gone so far off the deep end in that I don't know any of the words to my favorite songs, but the melodies, layering, drumming... memorized. :) Thanks for watching.
