The closing credits to the 1978 Vietnam film "The Boys in Company C," containing the full version fo the folk song heard earlier in the film. The name of the tune is "Here I Am," composed by actor Craig Wasson who also plays the character of Private Dave Brisbee in the film. The lyrics are below:

Uncle Sam, Im in Vietnam
Its a jungle, its a prison but here I am
Dreaming of the outside and freedom
Planning my getaway

Far away from this one-ship bay,
In the southeast tip of Asia where I lay
Dreaming of the outside and freedom
Planning my getaway.

Weapon drawn, I got my web gear on
I'm crawling on my belly near Khe Sanh
Dreaming of the outside and freedom
Planning my getaway

But there is a guard on the inside with a rifle in hand,
And a guard on the outside on this government land.

Uncle Sam, Im in Vietnam
Its a jungle, its a prison but here I am

Here I am

***

For fans of the film who didn't already know it, there was a DVD release late in '08. You can get it on Amazon.

  • One of the best Vietnam Era movies that you will ever watch... very emotional....and heck of a soundtrack...

  • @Hueynfo Got it on DVD now easily available ,i think i only paid a couple of quid ,must admit i still love it ..

  • Thanks to this movie that I first seen when I was ten on VHS, everyone I dislike since has been a 'Jive-Ass-Muther-Fucker'...12 years training for jungle warfare and ended up in a fucking desert...

  • @commandant15 : feeling inferior, are you? trying to suppress the desire to be more like them?

  • Does anyone know where to download the movie from.......

  • i hate black people

  • This is the only song that captures the hurt I still feel - want to cry, every time I hear it. I get lost in the tune over and over again. No one understands, I never really came back. I returned to be confronted by protesters, everyone seemed to hate the military. I often think I shouldn't have come back - wish I hadn't. I tried to go to Afghanistan, but they wouldn't take me - hoping I could come back from that one.

  • I first heard the song when this movie was on HBO in the 1970's. I have since become a US Marine and still to this day this song is haunting and represents to me Vietnam and the vets that served.

  • Got the Movie off Amazon, wow what a rush, all the years since I seen it, the real prequal to full metal Jacket, Lee Ermy made both movies what they are.

  • man, i 've had this song stuck in my mind or nearly 5 years!
