Here's my variation of the flip-top planer stand. The top is made of a 1/2" plywood sandwiched between two 3/4" sheets. The axle runs all they way through the top and is made of 1/2" rolled steel. At each end of the axle, there is a little piece of 1/2" (ID) copper pipe with and OD of 5/8" that acts like a bushing. The sides have 5/8" notches that receive the copper pipe. That way, the entire top is removable.
