Fraggle Rock  Dixie Wailin' Clip & Lyrics

« The Challenge »
Season 1 Episode 14
1983-04-11

3. Dixie Wailin [02:54] Lyrics
Performed by:
Boober, Gobo, Red and Junior Gorg
(And Mum Gorg)

When my time to go is here,
Call my friends to gather near.
Tell the doctor and the preacher that I'm failing.

"Boober, where did you learn a funeral dirge?" -Red
"I composed it in honor of my own departure." -Boober
"Hey, pick up the tempo, will ya? I like a funeral dirge you can
dance to." -Junior Gorg
"A funeral dirge?" -Red
"You can dance to?" -Gobo
"I think we're homeward bound." -Red
"All we have to do is.." -Gobo
"Pick up the tempo!" -Gobo and Red

But forget about your black,
'Cause I'm planning to come back.
Play some honky-tonkin' grief and Dixie wailing.

Pick me up and lay me down,
And spread the news all over town,
And tell 'em all to come or they'll be sorry.

"Slow down." -Boober

Pick me up and shake me twice.
I'm coming back from paradise.
This poor boy is here to live in glory.

"This should be somber and dignified." -Boober

When it's time to say good-bye,
All my friends will sit and cry,
And they'll watch the coffin rockin' round and squirmin'.

Then they'll raise a mighty shout,
When my bones come marching out.
And I praise myself and preach the final sermon.

"Wait a minute. You're losing the sad, maudlin quality." -Boober

Pick me up and lay me down,
And spread the news all over town,
And tell them all to come or they'll be sorry.

Pick me up and shake me twice,
I'm coming back from paradise,
This poor boy is here to live in glory.

When the Earth begins to quake,
From the shaking at my wake,
I'll be here and making music like a light wine [could be life line].

'Till the honky-tonkin' grief,
Gives the Angels sweet relief,
'Cause they know that Dixie wail is still surviving.

Pick me up and lay me down,
And spread the news all over town,
And tell them all to come or they'll be sorry.

Pick me up and shake me twice,
I'm coming back from paradise,
This poor boy is here to live in glory.

Pick me up and lay me down,
And spread the news all over town,
And tell them all to come or they'll be sorry.

Pick me up and shake me twice,
I'm coming back from paradise,
This poor boy is here to live in glory.
This poor boy is here to live in glory.

  • lol, although he sees his own death around every bend, Boober is HILARIOUS!!!

  • That's an awesome song. I bet it would sound even better if they added a banjo.

  • Next time I go to the bar, I'm going to try to start this one up.

  • @DontTread0nMe1776: Could be or it could be to distinguish between younger Fraggles & older ones--since it's only older Fraggles who seem to wear clothes--or it could simply be due to standards & practices (I mean, on The Muppet Show, Kermit's naked most of the time but Piggy wears clothes, yet on Sesame Street for example, young 3-4 year old monster couple Elmo & Zoe wear hardly anything at all).

  • @TherealRNO I was just being funny, but in response to your answer about the lack of pants, then why do they bother to wear shirts? Fashion? lol

  • @DontTread0nMe1776: No, for even the female fraggles are pantless (ex: Red here is only clad in her trademark red turtleneck), because they don't have the same concept of nudity we human Silly Creatures do, since they come from a old world society with symbotic relationships that doesn't see nudity as something to hide, due to the fact that there's no general provocatively sensual connotation to their just being in their fur.

  • @ztslovebird: I know. Jim's actual memorial with a lot of the Muppeteers with their principle characters is here also.

  • @TherealRNO The Muppets' memorial to Jim Henson is on here in its entirety. It's a sweet tribute to him; Kermit's out of town for a while and Fozzie and the others try to create a tribute to Jim Henson, but they don't know who he is. Then they find "research material" that Kermit left for them just in case, and they get to know the man beneath the frog. Then the fan mail is read (I wonder if any of it was real) that people sent it, consoling Kermit for the loss of his friend. It's really lovely.

  • @collgoff I read it a long time ago, and I don't remember where. According to TherealRNO's response, it was sung in tributes to Jim. He was such a brilliant artist and apparently a great man to work for that I'm glad they honored him.

  • @luv2aptnz When did you red that/

  • Does anyone find it disturbing that Junior is wearing a shirt and boots, but no pants?

  • @luv2aptnz: Well, the memorial is ON YouTube in parts. We get Big Bird sining Bein' Green, Gobo & Wembley singing the Wembling Song, The Old Man & The Sea, excerpts from the Henson family survivors, & the whole of the Muppeteers and their most memorable characters for the time singing Just One Person (as a Peanuts fan himself, Henson so loved the song that both of the tributes have it sung), among other things.
