Chasing Eric Johnson's Clean and Fuzz tone

The Fuzz is on.I get this clean tone by rolled-off the guitar volume down to 6-7 (max 10).Volume on full when playing Eric Johnson Cliff Dover's song intro.

2006 Fender Standard Mexico with Gold Noiseless set pickups---Custom RPL Buzz Factory (the clone of Z-Fex Fuzz Factory but with hand selected hi-quality vintage old components)---Boss DD-3 Digital Delay Japan----Vintage 1977 Marshall JMP MKII Super Bass head with 4x12 Rola Greenback speakers (set on clean and bed room volume level, bass 12-middle 12-treble knob off)

The sound is not quite there - but my compliments on your playing. You already have some good stuff going on (I'm talking about your technique - not necessarily the fact that you are close to pulling off this EJ stuff). I do believe that you will deliver something interesting of your own making as you get comfortable creating your own message on the instrument. You have good instincts. Hi! thank you very much for the nice input, very appreciated it. yes it's quite right, the EJ's signature tone is not there.It's too trebly and thin, lack of warmth and fatness of classic old fuzz.. I wonder have a vintage 69 Fuzz Face and old Plexi cranked up to nail his tone.

Could be worth bumping up the bass slightly to make the tone more liquid and elastic. Also I would not go with a fuzz for EJ lead, but an OD. A compressor into the fuzz would make it smoother still, but you'd really want to dime the amp and push the speakers for an increased overtone content.

You need the bridge pickup with a tone control. EJ actually uses his bridge pickup a lot.
