APOLLO 14 Golf Shot On The Moon

the thing that strikes me odd is how fast the ball falls to the surface when he drops it... it just seems that with less gravity it would drop at a slower rate.

@BillyNoon In my opinion, the ball does not travel very slow at all, in relation to the speed that he hit it. Most golf balls you've probably seen launched on Earth were hit with two hands from a full, very fast swing by someone who knows how to golf. The astronaut's swing is extremely slow, so the ball moves slow. Not to mention the dirt that he chopped up before hitting the ball, which might have made a cushion for it.

The friction that slows a moving golf ball down on earth is almost completely negligible, especially at short distances like this one. The zero friction of the moon won't SPEED UP the ball. Plus, the ball does not ever accelerate (in the x direction), except for the brief moment which it is in contact with the club. It should fly at exactly the same speed from the moment it leaves the surface of the moon until the moment it touches back down.
But I suppose that does not answer your question.

Go in the hole!!!!!! :)

why'd he only use one hand?

@sfchris I think maybe people will be to scared to goto the moon since apollo 18

@theeater23 with no air you'll always hit it straight. :-)
-
just so you know, you cant slice on the moon because the golf ball will travel straight unless it has another force acting upon it, like air. there isn't any air on the moon.

Not too many years from now, the location where that golf ball landed will be under plexiglass for moon tourists to gaze at......

almost 40 years later the golf ball re-entered earths atmosphere. most experts can only guess where it landed but some evidence points to a small island south of the united states known as "Haiti"
