Hello, thank you for posting this. What a wonderful human being to grace us with such an astounding amount of the very best music.

and we don’t know who was the author. In the succession war (1705-1714) the Catalans wanted as a king to the the Archduke Charles of Austria, and in that time the song ( a part of its lyrics, changing the letter) was used to praise the Archduke.

@ironlungs33 It’s normal that you can’t understand this because he speak Catalan not Spanish, Jordi Savall is a musician Catalan like Pau Casals (the music who re-popularized “El cant dels ocells” in English “the song of the birds). In the interview, he is talking about uncertainty of the song as this song have a lots of centuries, originally it was a Christmas song (the birds “els ocells” contribute to worship and to held the birth of Jesus)

They talk about the origins of the song (the words originally praise Jesus' birth, and then they were used in politics by the Austrias when they were trying to get our throne) and about the melody, how rooted this song is in our tradition, and how beautiful it is. They say that this kind of melody, so melancholic and even sad can make you FEEL even more than a happy song, and this is because it mixes a feeling of sensuality and spirituality in it. The language is Catalan, not Spanish. I assume 'el cant des ocells" means "the song of the birds", as "il canto degli ucelli" would in Italian. Fakkirr775's comment means, if I'm not mistaken: "The 'song of the birds' is much more than a song for the Catalan people. Rather, for us, it is a breath of the freedom we have lost as a nation and as a land, it is in word love for Catalonia, it is a wisdom which enslaves itself in the heart every time we hear it."

Beautiful music - understatement! Savaal is the supreme master of this difficult to play instrument. The best recording I know of where Casals plays this himself, is at the 1961 historic concert he gave at the White House before President Kennedy. He also played it in the Cinerama film "Windjammer" for the crew of the training vessel Christian Radich. Cheers.
