"The Sword", Episode 13 from Season 2 of DiC's run with the G.I. Joe cartoon. The episode is unique for several reasons:

1. It is the only regular season episode of any of the Joe cartoons that ever focused on Snake Eyes as a main character, and also the only one to refer to him as the greatest ninja of all time.

2. It is also one of the only episodes of any of the Joe cartoons that show Storm Shadow as his true self; i.e. a "good guy". Also, it is the only episode that shares the friendship between the two ninjas.

3. Slice and Dice have mistakenly had their names switched.

4. This is the only episode that shows the ninja force in action.

  • No, it actually didn't exist in the sunbow series. Show me one moment where they portrayed Duke and Scarlett as a couple. A cobra-induced dream of Shipwreck's doesn't count. The fact is, the very original mini-series in itself disproves the oft mistated non-fact. I think it comes from the idea that the alpha-male and alpha female always end up together (like Flint and Lady Jaye).

  • With all due respect, SCREW the Duke lovers! Who cares what they think? That whole Duke/Scarlett thing from the cartoons never made any sense whatsoever!

    Snake Eyes and Scarlett FTW!

  • He's right. The only female member of GI Joe that Duke actually kissed in the Sunbow cartoon was Covergirl. His relationship with Scarlett was mostly flirtatious, and she eventually got phased out after only 29 episodes, with Lady Jaye becoming the more prominent female character. You can't separate Scarlett and Snake Eyes without diminishing their characters. They have all the history, and carry the dramatic weight of the storyline. The comic books got it right and the cartoons got it wrong.

  • Since when Storm shadow made obivious blunders? Since when Scallette was not a ninja? She was trained by Snake eyes and indicted into the Aranhikage clan,Christ is was more skilled barehanded than half the joes. expeically Duke. Christ if it wasen't for Snake eyes the joes would of lost a lot of battles.

  • Stewie Griffin ?

  • From Metal Machine News:

Larry faced the difficult task of showcasing the

latest toys in the comic. “Characters like Duke, Sgt. Slaughter,

and the Fridge were sort of pushed on me and never made any

inroads into my personal fantasy cortex. Whereas Snake Eyes,

Scarlett, and Storm Shadow have taken up residence there."

  • Larry Hama: Well, Hasbro was kind of honked about having a character named Hawk because of the political implications. That implication hadn’t even occurred to me. I was only concerned that it made no sense for the First Shirt to be in charge. The top sergeant runs the company, but it belongs to the commanding officer, who is ultimately responsible.

  • From JoeBattlelines:

JBL: In the comic, Hawk was very much the central authority of the GIJoe team. The cartoon initially delegated command of the team to Duke, with Hawk showing up significantly later in the series. Was there any pressure to sideline Hawk in favor of the First Sergeant?

  • @MrRobenson2009 Some things change, others stay the same(Superman/Lois Lane). Fans were upset by Gwen Stacy's death to be sure, but her character's death due to her her storyline having nowhere left to go, and the cartoons certainly wouldn't pair her with Captain America or something silly like that. The fact is that Duke/Scarlett were implied, never fully realized, and she was phased out in season 2. Theirs was a union of convenience for Ron Friedman and Sunbow, nothing more.
