Scenes from the movie Billy Elliot (both as a teen and grown man) to the tune of I Can Fly (written by R. Kelly), sung by Bianca Ryan. Stars Julie Walters, Adam Cooper, Gary Lewis and Jamie Bell as the young Billy Elliot. Directed by Stephen Daldry. Choreography by Peter Darling. Includes scene from Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake"

If Billy Elliot is about one thing, it is that we are all capable of making lives for ourselves which are full of joy and self-expression, whilst we might not all become ballet dancers we are capable of finding moments of real profundity and creativity whatever our circumstances. But more than that, we have a duty to ourselves and each other to create a society where this possibility in all of us is nurtured and can flourish. We owe it to the next generation to create a world where it is possible for the Billy Elliots as yet unborn to have a chance to succeed and flourish rather than be fed to the machine which grinds us into identical pieces only fit for consumption. If Billy Elliot conveys any message at all, I hope it is that it is possible to fight back and resist and it is possible to move on without forgetting where you come from. -- Lee Hall, the writer of Billy Elliot

I know that we can produce a society where man will cease to simply go to work and have a little leisure, but will release his latent talent and ability and begin to produce in the cultural sense all the things I know hes capable of: music, poetry, writing, sculpture whole works of art that, at the moment, lie dormant simply because we, as a society, are not able to tap it.

  • really bad, you have not included any of the scenes with his gay friend michael. as a 11 years old boy is friends everything, and its friends you share your secrents with. and in the film there is so tiny amount of scenes with hes friends, so this movie should at least have one of the kisses, and tuching scenes. the movie itself is very negative to homosexuals, it does not include michael in the trailer, and he is the best playing, and most important person in bills life.

    reply?

  • Since the point of this vid was the fulfillment of his dream to be a dancer, the relationship aspect of the movie was not germane. I do find it heartwarming to see that Michael made it to the performance that many years later. However, his teacher didn't. I had read that it was because Julie (the actress) had not been available to shoot the scene.

  • Oh for goodness sake freedomfits this is not a gay movie it's about the struggle faced by millions of working class people during the Thatcher government when mines were closed and people were on the breadline! A young boy 'regardless of his sexuality' defied the working class stigma to become a ballet dancer and leave his stereotypical life! It's about being all you can be! Michael in the movie was always supportive - it was never a gay issue!!

  • It is perfect that teacher was not there. I thought she died. It is better, bec. it makes you think.

It is better this way. It would have ben "corny" for everybody to be there.

  • I loved it ! Thanks.

  • well doo you think a 11 years old boy could be a professional dancer without alot contact with their friends?

well at least i would definetly not have been able to do that. but its not the scene when he is 25 years old michael is tuching, its at his young age of 11 when he is always so innocent and sad and you see every act he is he got what can i say some sort of sad face when billy says somthing that touches him. well this movie is great but its to much about everything else than billy:/

  • Stunning! Love the paragraph from Arthur Scargill too.
