New York CHR Battles from WCBS-TV 1983. The focus is on WHTZ (Scott Shannon,) WPLJ (Jim Kerr) and WAPP (Joe Krause) as the battle is on to be number one!
From when it signed on, the Apple owned the "rock franchise" in New York - it hammered WNEW and WPLJ like they were roofing nails. Then in 1984, WAPP's parent company (Doubleday Broadcasting) saw WHTZ's ratings doing CHR and chased after it. Stupid. The Apple's format change to CHR killed it - the station wound up being bought by Emmis and turned into dance-y "Hot 103.5" And as for Scott Shannon, well.... Alumnus, WAPP '83-'85, WHTZ '85 - '86.
In the end only WHTZ and PLJ survived. Well PLJ survived three format changes. Album Rock to CHR to Hot AC and kept its hertiage calls intact (never mind the WWPR calls back in 1988).
Too bad all 3 stations succumbed to the radio monopolies (2 stations WHTZ and WKTU, formerly WAPP, now owned by Clearchannel) which operates by continuing to play "Evacuate The Dance Floor" 24/7 all the time.
Remember NYers, payola could sometime turn hit songs into worthless crap!
there was a station like this in L.A called movin 93.9 exactly like in this video. Well back then it was "new" but its classics now. but the station got sold. I enjoyed it a lot.
what ever happen when WAPP became WQHT 103.5

The idea is to do away with all New York radio. It's all incompetent.

@JoseTwitterFan Half the stations were making money back in the day and the others where not. That was the ideal behind ownership consolidation.

LOL at the WAPP DJ cleaning his record with "Discwasher".
After watching this video, I never want to hear "Love Is A Battlefield" again.
