Hi! I've had quite a few questions from those who are in high school/college and considering a life in the TV news business. There's no way I can cover everything I'd like to say in one YT video, but hopefully this gives you sort of an overview as far as what it takes to get started in TV news.

  • Hey Emily, I think you do a great job on the news. I live here in central Illinois and watch the news every morning( have to know what the weather is gonna be like!). ch.3 news! xx

  • Hi!! I don't know if you're in the Champaign area- but do you ever watch Kalee do the weather? she's one of my best friends!

  • I totally agree with what you're saying,I use these philosophies in my film career. Iwouldalso add develop a thick skin it's key in the entertainment industyr.Emily you are so wise girl, this vid will help alot of people.

  • oh absolutely. I wish I would've included that- you have to have a thick skin and be able to constructive and NOT constructive criticism and move on. maybe I'll have to make another vid for that LOL

  • any videos you can show to us while you were reporting? just curious..btw you are so gorgeous and smart

  • aw thanks! I'm going to try to post more of them soon- i just haven't come up with a good way to transfer there from work to my computer here at home- we don't always record on the whole newscast. I'll work on it though!!

  • This was extremely helpful, and the tips were very beneficial.

  • @meymey50 re your question about the shyness. i have that problem too. i'm in the news reporting field right now. i would recommend that you take an improvisation class, a beginner's one for sure (not the ones where you're with ppl wanting to become actors b/c the teachers will do heavy feedback)! it REALLY relaxes you and makes you feel really comfortable doing silly things.

  • I'm a journalist for print and I think you should also mention that this job never stops. You have to be ahead of time ALL THE TIME. You can't just go home and stop thinking or informing yourself about what's going on in the world. You can't just go on holiday and turn off everything for one week. You would miss a lot and this can be really embarassing when you come back and start your job again. This for me is really stressful - but nevertheless I love this job!

  • Good luck with your news career. My town is so small we thought Feng Shui was Hopsings uncle on Bonanza. News is cool.

  • the high school i am in has a tv station on campus. i anchor and I LOVE IT! the only reason i tried anchoring was because of you, i originally wanted to do cameras and all that backstage stuff... :)

  • you sound like a new caster..lol

    no wonder

  • Thank you so much for this video! I'm studying broadcast journalism right now and hoping to be a reporter! :-)

  • if you're looking for an internship in the field, but can't find one- then i'd recommend getting a part-time position like a production assistant at a tv station. i did that and have been for 2 years and i'm in my final year of college. within a month of doing that, they moved me up to a temporary assignment desk editor and now i'm a weekend assignment desk editor and i get to help write the show. it really gives you an insight on what goes into tv news so you can understand it better!

  • do you mean you didnt like reporting? what are you pursuing now? im starting college in the fall and some insight would be great!

    thanks! ^_^

  • im starting college soon, what type of computer do you reccomend? a macbook or an imac desktop? i want to be a reporter/journalist but im really shy, do you know how to build up confidence? thanks for the tips!!!
