Beneath the veil of the political relationship between the United States and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela are ordinary people struggling to combat similar issues in their local communities. Over 28 million people inhabit Venezuela, a former Spanish colony located on the northern coast of South America. The Afro-Venezuelan Network (ROA) estimates that approximately 30 percent of Venezuela is Afro-descendant and that there are approximately 5,000 Afro-descendant communities in over 50 municipalities.
