This was a popular song back in 1947. Many singers recorded it. Frank Sinatra and Art Lund had #1 sellers with it. Frankie's version was #14 for his 2d charted recording.

  • Hey 1938 which recording co. did Frankie start on before Mercury?

  • @Geronimodelau In 1944 Frankie cut his first record for a small

Record Company named Bel Tone which folded soon after. Then in 1945 he made several recordings for another small outfit named ATLAS. Some of these recordings were not issued till after he made a name for himself at Mercury, I don't think he made a dime from these small outfits.

  • thanks for posting this i once had a recording of frankie doing stella by starlight the best i ever heard thanks

  • If you had a record of Frankie doing "Stella By Starlight" You had something rare. I don't have it and I can find nothing in all my reference material

showing that he ever recorded it. That was a big hit for Frank Sinatra back in 1947.

  • @setiember11

how does it suck? Just because it doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean it sucks.

Frankie is one of the best singers of 1940s and 1950s.

  • i had it as part of a collection of several different artitsts close to thrity years ago/ put it on a cassette and lost it the cassette as well the lp collection but ever since i ve been looking for it thanks for your reply

  • During the Mercury years, Frankie sang several songs like this, but the ones he was noted for were as you say more kick. But he did some that were pure awfull. Such as his version of "I'm Looking Over A Four Leafe Clover" This was a fast moving upbeat song that Frankie sang as a slow ballet. Also there was "Bebop Spoken Here" and "Put'em In A Box". Well You can't win them all.
