Hollywood tough guy Ray Winstone shows his support for The FA's Respect Parent Guide to Youth Football

Winstone is here to promote The FA's new Respect Parent Guide after research showed that more than 7,000 youngsters had hung up their boots over the last couple of years due to pressure from the sidelines.

Winstone believes that parents need to lose the "win at all costs" attitude and bring some enjoyment back to the game: "Kids want their parents to watch them play football but they want to be supported by them, not embarrassed".

The FA Respect programme has already had a major breakthrough in the grassroots game with dissent figures showing an 8% improvement nationwide on last season's totals while 567 leagues have shown their support by becoming Respect Leagues.

With one in three matches taking place across the country without a qualified match official, The FA is aiming to recruit 8,000 new referees by 2012.

Other FA plans to improve pitch side behaviour include teaming up with the Football Foundation to provide grants for Respect Barriers which ensure that spectators are standing well away from the touchline at youth football games.

Yeah, being a ref is stressful enough without these kinds of jerks (used to be one but quit after 3 years), The ref can't see everything, but so long as he keeps the game going, people safe and sticks to his guns while doing his best, then that is the kind of ref I like playing with. Also, a note to everyone including referees, the ref has the power to kick people out and away from the game, that includes the coaches AND the spectators.

I have so many friends now that have turned to Rugby because of the respect thing ..Nothing on the TV a few months back so thought i'd try and watch the football .. first few seconds a guy takes a dive .... next few minutes full of guys screaming at the ref .. next shot shows a guy spitting all over the place and swearing .. off it went !!

I took my young daughters to the Saracans recently and they both asked me why the fans wernt a bunch of idiots like the football fans .. says a lot ...

I totally agree with this video but I also think they could use more video replay technology to help their work, that will maybe weed out a part of people who are being disrespectful. Sure there are people who will remain disrespectful and deny the truth even if it sits right under their nose.

damn right you're losing refs. this sort of lack of respect is why I wont ever become a sunday league ref, a teacher, a policeman, or anything similar that invites abuse. if people are going to treat you like this (and they are in 2011) then let some other idiot do the job.

fantastic video , just wished all these mugs who go to kids football watched this before they start shouting there mouths off. its why we have such a shit england football team .it why all the great kids have quit so they have not got to listen to abuse
