..... JEALOUSY : envy, resentment, negativity, rivalry, back-biting......
..... Jealousy is a SELF - DESTRUCTIVE - NEGATIVE atmosphere that YOU are creating around YOURSELF......ultimately affecting your OWN performance.
ENCOURAGEMENT: support, optimism, appreciation, inspiration, incentive.....RELIEF.
Instead of focusing on (what you believe to be) someone elses shortcomings, seek the positive, encourage the goodness.
A COMPLIMENT is the best defense (relief) against jealousy.
Music is about JOY, ADVENTURE, COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK.
Consider yourself as a PROTECTOR of music, an honor to be amongst those who are taking it to the top.
We're all in this together and we're all responsible for NURTURING the music....... and ENCOURAGEMENT..... is the NOURISHMENT that music needs.
Music depends on your eagerness and dedication to get the job done, no matter how unimportant or "below your potential" your role may seem at the moment, it is YOUR responsibility to hold up your end and NOT have the music (or your talent) affected by a resentful..... envious.....attitude.
Eventually, you will get your chance..... and..... you will be GREAT because your music will be BUOYANT with ENCOURAGEMENT..... OPTIMISM..... and POSITIVE INSPIRATION.
Ultimately, the FUN in music relies totally on YOURSELF, by creating your own adventures, opportunities,
thrills and memories....HOW ???
Start your own groups
Compose your own music
Book your own performances,
Record your own records,
SUBSIDIZE your own individual talents.
THIS is the STUFF that keeps you "IN LOVE WITH MUSIC"
Never lose sight of that original feeling you got when you first picked up your instrument......Remember ???
Music is a great way to earn a living, doing something you love, utilizing a God given talent.....and getting paid for it................ Good Luck.

Thank you for posting this great lecture =] I feel that some young musicians like myself lose sight of the real goal: making music not aiming for fame... Thank you sooo much!

Hi Ray. I have an old tape of a song you did on the old KLON with Chuck Niles and I can't for the life of me find it. It was from Apossionato I believe, just you and a guitar.

I exactly know what u mean. Being a musician myself, Iv'e never really had that pathetic personality trait, but the people I shared and played my music with did. Gave them a piece of my mind. U explain the musicians jelousy well. Enjoyed the video. Oh and by the way, Beautiful flute playing.

Wow, what a powerful message. Wish I had the addresses of all deserving of this to forward it. All I can really do is heed this message myself. While I am not a musician, I am a participant in music as a listener. Thank you.

Well said. I'm still jealous of your wonderful flute sound though.
Should that read "Joe LaBarbera"? Almost played with him at a Jazz Workshop here in Victoria. You have to be good to play with him!
Nice work Ray. And, brilliantly put on jealousy, inspiration, responsibility, potential, love, God and the other things.
