RX-8 production took 18-months to exceed total FD3S RX-7 production (1992-2002)
RX-8 sales from 2003 - 2011 have exceeded 200,000 units.
To date, only RX-2 + RX-3 4-door sedan sales from the 1970's have exceeded RX-8 sales. All other 4-door RX's have been outdone (sales wise) by the RX-8
RX-8 design was always a compromise theme between the ultra sporty RX-7 & the ultra urban every day car needs of the common people.

Worth noting is that Mazda have already done an RX-9 from 1978-1981 to "General export" countries. Domestically, it was known as an LA43S Luce with 12A - 13B - MA1800 - MA2000 engine options. Piston (export) version was known as a 929.

the rx-8 was mazda's biggest disappointment in my opinion. they took the rx-7 and downgraded it into a sports car that anybody could drive "fast" because of it small body and the feel you would get driving it was so smooth... not how a real sports car should be.

reinforce the rx-8's engine with thicker, stronger metal, redo the ports and give it better performing rotors..and then make a GT model with a ko4 turbo out of the factory and BAM! perfecto :)
