The thing that's really worth noting, if you watch the DVD commentary, he states that Nathan wasn't the last samurai, but rather Kasumoto was. In fact, Cruise says that his part wasn't really the lead, but rather it was the gentleman who played Kasumoto.

This was the first Tom Cruise movie I've seen where he stepped outside of himself. And oh, the female lead makes my heart stop.
