On the Volos-Agria Section of Pelion Museum Railway

Between the years 1991 -1994 the restored museum tank loco "Μηλέαι" No.101 (ex No. 52, 600 mm narrow gauge, type 2-6-0T (1'Cn2t) of the renowned Pelion Railway (Volos-Mileai) in Greece, built 1903 by Tubize (Belgium),
was run on special excursion services, as this in 1993, on the Volos-Agria section (urban part) of the line. Unfortunately local authorities paved over this section in 1994 maintaining that the operation was an annoyance to the city traffic and life!!!

Ωραίο το βιντεάκι και με αρχειακή αξία! Παιδί, ακόμα, στη δεκαετία το '60, είχα την τύχη να κάνω ολόκληρη τη διαδρομή Βόλος-Μηλιές (αναχώρηση από το Σ.Σ. του Βόλου, διασχίζοντας την οδό Δημητριάδος κλπ) με το ιδιο τρένο και ήταν μια αξέχαστη εμπειρία. Δε νομίζω να υπάρχει άλλο τρένο που να καλύπτει τόσο μεγάλη απόσταση μέσα σε κατοικημένες περιοχές. Κι είνα κρίμα που δεν επιβίωσε έστω και ως τουριστική ατραξιόν!

@chryseliseos Σε πολλές χώρες, όπως στη Γερμανία, υπάρχουν γραμμές που περνούν εν είδει τράμ μέσα σε δρόμους πόλεων και μάλιστα χρησιμοποιύνται από ατμήλατα τραίνα, αλλά κανείς δεν εξανίσταται, κανείς δεν διανοείται να τα εμποδίσει. Βεβαίως χρησιμοποιείται άριστης ποιότητας κάρβουνο, οι μηχανές οι γραμμές και τα οδοστρώματα συντηρούνται κανονικά, οι οδηγοί δικύκλων έχουν λίγο κουκούτσι μυαλό να μή κινούνται στα διάκενα των γραμμών... Και ας είναι οι περισσότερες αυτοκινητοπαραγωγικές χώρες.

Unfortunately not. One after another, the few museum steam locos in Greece are abandonned, left to rust with no proper maintainance, perhaps with the exception of the normal gauge Austerity Lb.964. Whoever had the chance to see them at that time, may consider itself lucky. Thank you for your comment!

In fact, the narrow gauge steam locomotives are still being preserved. Actually, due to the scarcity and unavailability of parts, one has been completely restored with parts of the others and is being on display, while the chassis of another one has been equipped with a diesel engine and still performs the mountain part of the track from Lechonia to Milies daily from May to September. Due to some errosion on a stone bridge cause by a landslide this year, it is unlikely it will run again...
