I took apart a cheap 6 volt battery once, and inside were two circular battery holders like the ones you can buy at RadioShack, and each one had 4AA batteries. The four in each one were connected in series, and the two holders themselves were connected in parallel. The rest of the battery was filled with ordinary concrete to add weight to make it feel like a more expensive battery! Others I took apart had four name-brand D batteries!
