How much would you be willing to pay someone to make a grocery run for you? That's just one of the types of errands members post on the online website TaskRabbit. TaskRabbit allows people to post tasks they need completed, from putting together an Ikea bookcase to dropping off items at Goodwill, and then assign a price to the task. People who are willing to complete these errands - so-called "runners" - will accept the tasks and then be financially compensated for their efforts. In short, TaskRabbit pairs people who need work and have time to run errands with those who need to get errands done.
In an interview with the Christian Science Monitor, TaskRabbit's Anne Moellering says a vast majority of the website's runners are either "unemployed or underemployed" - meaning they have time to complete errands and they have a need to make money. TaskRabbit is currently only available in San Francisco and Boston, but the company is looking to expand to other large cities - possibly Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago, among others.
To list a task, users can sign up (for free) on TaskRabbit.com. For those who want to become a runner for TaskRabbit, online applications are available. According to TaskRabbit, all applicants must undergo an interview and a full background check before they are hired.
TaskRabbit is the brainchild of Boston resident Leah Busque. In 2008, Busque founded TaskRabbit (originally named "RunMyErrand") after she and her husband realized they were out of dog food. They were in a hurry to make a dinner engagement and didn't have time to stop at the store. They wished someone could run the errand for them. The idea for TaskRabbit was born and within months, a website was up and running.
