Audio only. Track 02, Dave Van Ronk: The Folkways Years 1959 - 1961.

Deciphering the original arrangement, lyrics, and composer is tricky. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesitation_Blues

Regardless, this remains my favorite version.

  • First heard this from Dave at the Second Fret on Sansom Street in Philadelphia. Girls behind us were in ecstasy. He was great and followed by a new unknown songman, Phil Ochs.

  • @SuperJohnnykay :he joined the Jefferson Airplane, playing rock, but was always blues, thus Hot tuna as a side line,1969.I totally agree with your statement that Jorma and Jack would not be going,oh yeah, were better than Dave. What is truly amazing about listening to Hot Tuna, is how well Jorma and Jack play together. What is great about Dave is the warmth of his voice-then there is Fred Neil,Dave Bromberg, and a few others.

  • @luckyshow :well i diont know ir you ve got your timeline right.Rev Gary Davis wrote this song in the 40s. Guitarists in the New York area would go around to Garys house, his wife would cook a meal, thebudding guitarists like the young Jorma ,Fred Neil and Dave would learn some altenating bass lines and the intricacies of the Revs style. So Dave has his take on the revs stuff-being a folkie it has more of that 1960 feel to it.Jorma was leaerning his stuff around the same time, early 60s.In 65,...

  • Now get this straight. Cassady and Jorma would think you were sick in the head (in a bad way) to diss this version. It is essential, it is existential. Van Ronk's voice fits this like a glove. Every classic doesn't need a jot bass guitar or Louis Armstrong on trumpet.

Hot Tuna came 20 years after this version has nothing to do with anything. V. Rock's version came 20 years after Ella's version & Lena's version, 30 yrs after other great versions...

  • Dave is as underrated as hell! I'm just a 29 year old kid, but I've been into this kind of music for a long time. Been turning my friends on to Dave as of late...honestly, I'd kinda forgotten about him too. then of all things Amazon recommended the Folkways Years to me, and I said "oh damn...yeah!"

  • i cant find his version of motherless children :(

  • keo774 - yes, that's ok. Obviously I'm a big DVR fan (for about 40 years now). Hot Tuna's version is also very well done. Is THAT ok?
