Yes, that Google Earth plugin is pretty awesome, except that the resulting black and white satellite imagery is so 1950. In this episode, Mike shows a new trick for getting the COLOR version of Google Earth's satellite imagery into Google SketchUp. This episode is a continuation of the IES Series (Episodes #51 & #52). If anyone from the DHS asks where you learned this, it wasn't us...

  • looks cool but seems like a lot of work just to get a colour terrain

  • @kkh5565 The process outlined in this video would be applicable to anyone using SketchUp version 7 or earlier. In SketchUp version 8, this process was greatly improved. Users can now import a color satellite image (Both 2D and 3D) directly from Google Maps by way of SketchUp's new "Add Location" tool (located in the Google Toolbar). The process for adding color satellite imagery no longer requires Google Earth or the other shenanigans outlined in this vid. YAY!

  • I had trouble getting this to work right. Is it because the black and white aerial photo that I acquired from GE is not rectangular? (ie, the parallel heights are not equal, nor are the parallel widths equal). When I go through the process in the video I end up with a distorted color aerial. Using the pins to correct doesn't seem to fix it.

  • @seanjergens hmmm, i've been able to get this to work with non-rectangular sites. typing the dimensions of the site just gets the site image set to a sensible default. after setting the dims for the texture, make sure to 'reset' it. then use the pins for fine point adjustments. also, make sure you're using the pins to edit the texture on the Flat 2D version of the terrain, not the 3D version. hope that helps, if not lemme know.

  • we're using SKetchUp Pro. but you should be able to get the same result using the free version.

  • It now imports into sketchup 8 as colour by defaul.

  • my steep terrain comes in as a parallelogram rather than a rectangle, so the imported image didn't have the same aspect ratio as the terrain or terrain image.

  • My VE Ware stops running at XML converting at 7%. It's frustrating.

  • IT WORKS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Are you using Sketch up Pro or the free download?

And if your using pro can i use the free version and get the same result?
