@AWWM3 i know what cataplexy is... i used to have it at least two or three times a day before i found drugs that worked for me. what i was saying is that you are completely conscious the whole time, even when you can't move a muscle. And Narcolepsy isn't really falling asleep to emotional situations, cataplexy is what is triggered by emotions, and is just one symptom. Some people have narcolepsy but the only symptom they have is EDS... which just means that they're tired most of the time.

@ZyXwVuTs99 yes you do actually fall asleep. It's caused by very low levels / low receptor levels of Orexin, which is the main hormone that keeps you awake. It's true that you lose muscle tone, and this is one of the symptoms of Narcolepsy which is called Cataplexy. Narcolepsy itself is falling asleep in emotional situations such as laughter, anger, excitement, surprise, etc..

the only thing you have wrong is that most of the time when you collapse because of extreme emotion, you don't actually fall asleep... you just lose all muscle tone!
