The place you call a motel in Colorado is known as the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado. The Stanley Hotel was built by Freelan O. Stanley in 1909.

Only the shots at the beginning are the real motel in Colorado. The rest are of the sets made in England for the filming of "The Shining" in 1979-1980. Kubrick spent an elaborate amount of money recreating the interior of a motel. There is an excellent documentary on the whole set on the special edition DVD by Kubrick's daughter... Check it out!
