Note: I think the real problem here is that this video was edited with Windoze Movie Maker and therefore encoded in WMV format, which is a bitch to transcode from, hence the shite quality. Oh well.

The concept is worthy of a revisit.

I am not sure if WMM is actually the problem. Have you ever tried uploading this video to a site other than YouTube, vimeo for example?

I haven't tried uploading this elsewhere, I'm not sure I even have the original anymore: I edited it at home with my sister's camera/computer. I did save it from WMM as a "video for local playback" and the file was over 100mb.

If you look at the very first few frames of this video it is acceptable quality, and then goes bad. I think this may have something to do with WMV using a variable frame rate which then forces youtube's transcoder to do a lot of interpolations.

Definitely an interesting issue to investigate further, it's possible that this video was just a horribly sadistic fringe case for Youtube's transcoder because of all the motion and the various frame rates from slowing some clips down.
