HR experts want to know why there were gaps in your work history and it's important to convey what you were doing during a time where you may not have been working.

Interviews are the perfect time to address this topic, but go into it prepared and have your answer buttoned up before the employer asks. Most importantly, as Layne points out, don't be defensive and don't be apologetic - explain it and tell the story and don't linger on the emotional impact.
