Cardinal John Henry Newman is set to be beatified very soon now that the pope has officially recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession.

The approved miracle was the inexplicable cure of a back ailment suffered by deacon Jack Sullivan.

Peter Jennings
Spokesperson, Cause for beatification of Cardinal Newman
"He prayed and prayed everyday to the intercession of Newman, not for himself but so he might continue his deaconate classes and be ordained a deacon which he wanted to do."

Beatification is the step that precedes canonization. It means the candidate for sainthood can be venerated in his diocese.

Cardinal John Henry Newman was an Anglican presbyter that converted to Catholicism in 1845. He was one of the most important figures of the Oxford movement that advocated for the Church of Englands return to its Catholic roots.

One of his biggest admirers is Benedict XVI, who during his years in the seminary studied Newmans life and writings.

The only thing thats left is the date for beatification. The ceremony could be celebrated next year in Rome or London, the cardinals place of birth.

  • Did he perform a miracle in his life time and why is it so hard to pray to God as men have been instructed to do in scripture, why this clear form of idol worship, or so it seems?

  • Bull shit. If he could cure people of illness why is he not doing this full time. Have someone other than the vatican that isnt biased confirm this. This sounds as realistic as wizards and vampires.

  • I once cured my strep throat by smoking cigarettes. It went away didn't it? Must be cause and effect.

  • @hartleymartin What I mean Newman was not a martyr of England.

  • @xzyza2000 - I don't know what you are talking about there are plenty of beatified who were non-martyrs.

  • @dacatholicbandorgan - He's wearing a Dalmatic - it's easy to mistake the two vestments as they are similar at first appearances.

  • Henry VIII started the "anglican" church on the sin of divorce and then eventually died of syphilis...what a "proud" tradition! Because of him and Martin Luther (who was a Catholic priest) we now have 30,000 "churches". No unity there. I believe in The Church instituted by Christ Himself...The Catholic Church! The One,Holy,Apostolic Church. So did Cardinal Newman, Thos. More and John Fisher who were martyred for their beliefs.

  • If he was beatified; he will be the first beatus who is a non-martyr..
