DIRECTOR'S HAND: Anton Checkov discussed the necessity of an object that is introduced into the story must be used later. This technique is known as Chekhov's Gun and the use of the gun early in the film foreshadows it's use later on. "One must not put a loaded rifle on the stage if no one is thinking of firing it."
THUMBTACK: this is my term and I'm not sure it has an official name. Here Scott is "thumbtacking" the image of the neat counter with the blue glass on the neatly folded towel into our head along with the knowledge that we are in Louise's apartment.
