OK here's the deal- a parent @ my daughter's school applied for a grant from her employer, Wal*Mart. She was awarded the $500 grant and presented it to the school during a citizen of the month ceremony. It was a generous and thoughtful gesture, especially for the most inner city school in our area, serving mostly underprivileged kinds from low income homes, including my own.I am happy for the school and the children that will benefit from this donation, but I am not happy with what happened next. After the presentation on the check, the Wal*Mart employee then instructed the group of approximatly 300 children (the kids who were given awards were thankfully in another room, so they've been subtracted) that since she'd given them something, she'd like something in return. She told them that they neede to perform the "Wal*Mart cheer", you know- that peppy song that the associate sing at the beginning of a shift to get their adrenaline pumping. The children did as they were told, and at the same exact time the brainwashing cycle began and the soap was poured in. I dont think that corporate America should be doing this. Under paid working living below the poverty level, unfair wages for women, and non-union Wal*Mart should not be influing my daughter's comsumer behaviors at such a young age. (And neither should McDonald's and their toys but they aren't coming into her school and making her flip burgers) There we have it. I think Micheal Moore would love to see this. Really a shame.. But to me it's no different than hazardous religious views being taught in schools. All that shit has to stop.

I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more attention. But I think you're missing the point a bit. They're not breeding little consumers. Consumers don't have to sing the song. They're breeding little employees. Not to be offensive, but they did it in a low-income, inner city school. Wal-Mart's train of thought is pretty clear there. In any case, this just makes one go "wow". I'll be reposting this for sure.
