When Thatcher came to power inflation was rampent, the economy was going down the tubes. The miners were able to hold the majority of the people to ransom to ensure that their jobs were subsidised. She saved the economy and created the Britain there is today. Without her the standard of living for everyone would be MUCH lower & thousands would still be without there own homes. There is a clear comparison-Clems reforms started the rot, Maggies solved it.

No, not COMMUNISTS-innocent people that dared to criticise the removal of democracy in favour of a brutal free-market dictatorship which brought economic ruin on the country. And even people that didn't. Why are Americans so obsessed by Communism? Chile had NOTHING to do with Communism. It was a SOCIALIST, democratic state beforehand, and very successful too. How can anyone support Thatcher when she openly defends Pinochet and called him a friend? That man was responsible for the murder and torture of thousands of Chileans. When visitng London in 1998 Pinochet was arrested for Human rights violations and Thatcher fought for his release. When he died she said that she was 'greatly saddened'. These facts alone demonstrate what a disgusting individual she is.

"some of those reforms would have been instituted"-That is exactly what I said. However Labours fatal nationalisation wouldnt have. "Britain did well in the 60s". relative to what? Relative to other western nations it didnt. During the 60s British industry declined and growth was slow. Yes there were external factors in the 70s, But Labs policies made things worse, the only way to fix the probs was Thatcherism. What would U have had done? Left things as they were? That was tried and didnt work.
