SURREALISTIKA, a kitchen sculpture created by home furnishings experts IKEA, celebrates creativity in design. Following its unveiling to the public on Thursday 12th August, the sculpture will take centre stage as part of The Surreal House exhibition at the Barbican, London.

Bringing fantasy and imagination to life, the sculpture incorporates the natural beauty of the Silver Birch tree intertwined with elements of an everyday kitchen. It depicts a surreal vision of the future when environmental concerns will be ever more at the core of kitchen design.

The Silver Birch was chosen because it has always been a source of inspiration for Swedish designers and artists, including Carl Larsson who in 1896 famously painted 'Breakfast under the Big Birch'. It is also a wood believed to have mystical qualities of its own, protecting people against evil spirits as well as symbolising love and fertility.

Anna Crona, Marketing Director for IKEA UK & Ireland said: "SURREALISTIKA was born out of our belief that without creative thinking, there would be no inspirational design. Creativity sits at the core of our approach to product design as everyday we must challenge ourselves to come up with even better ideas that suit our production capabilities as well as our customers' needs, tastes and budgets. And never at the expense of good quality, inspirational design and the environment."

"We chose to depict a kitchen as not only is this where we spend nearly a month of our time every year, it's where we can make a big difference to the impact our lifestyles at home have on the environment. At IKEA we offer a host of solutions to help people live a more sustainable life in their kitchens and save money along the way. Through SURREALISTIKA we want to encourage people to think about the sustainable way of life, especially when it comes to recycling their household waste and saving water and energy."

IKEA is the lead sponsor of the Barbican Centre's Surreal House exhibition. On Thursday 12th August IKEA is also hosting a debate on the future of kitchens, which will discuss the findings of an independent Future Kitchens Report, recently commissioned by IKEA and prepared by the Future Laboratory.
