@coppermtnram If you visit Naples you'll be much more shocked!!

The traffic has non written rules involving timing, consideration, hierarchy, synergy that are not spelled out with lines, signs, and signals. You are on your own more or less and have to be very diligent at all times. When I came home I hated driving in the states and it took me a year to re-adjust! Rome and its culture has a way of going home with you LOL!

@morpheus1x Well said..I concur...

Don't rent unless you are good at city driving and the like. I liked driving rome. I'm a good driver and everyone there is "in sync" even though the traffic looks chaotic there is order. Beautiful country and lifestyle! Learn a little Italian and dress appropriate before you go. Ciao.

@coppermtnram I read only now your comments here.
You are right about the scooters between cars but we are all use to live here and the perception of the danger is a little different than you but I undertand you. You are welcome here in Rome and in Italy everytime you want to come.
But I suggest you to study a little italian cause it would let you feel less foreigner and more integrated and thus more relaxed and sure of yourself and so you can enjoy more the vacation.
an hug by Rome.

@lobobz thank you finally someone understands there is a perfect coordination among the drivers in Italy. It' s sufficient to understand it. You was able to do. Bravo. An hug from Rome.

who is able to drive in Italy is able to drive everywhere! siete voi che non siete capaci a guidare non noi....Nobody ask you to come here in Italy if you scorn our country stay home it's better for you and it's better for us. Italy is only for who loves it and respects it.
I dont' understand why whereas no italian slander your countries on youtube instead many of you slander the ours. Who is civil you or us?

I drove in Rome and other parts of Italy, loved driving over there. There is a certain system to it, a great system when you understand it.
My personal shock was narrow streets, scooters riding between cars, and signs I couldn't read because I don't speak the language. The experience was frightening at certain moments, but certainly did not change my opinion that Rome is great!

Having lived in several USA cities, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, I don't think it is "Slander" at all. Horrible traffic is a way of life in virtually every major city in the world. This does not change my perception that cities like New York, Rome, Paris, Athens, etc. are amazing jewels in world culture, history, art, cuisine, and people. I can't wait to start saving to visit your wonderful country and city again!!

We loved Rome. We did not hate the traffic, and if anything, it was an attraction as well!
