Thank you for your interest in our master's program in Communication Studies. The department offers coursework in Rhetoric, Communication Theory & Philosophy, Political Communication, Intercultural Communication, and Interpersonal and Organizational Communication. This coursework can be applied to the MA degree Communication Studies.

Graduate students in Communication Studies (CMST) may choose between either thesis or comprehensive plans of study. A thesis is the traditional track for students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or simply a research interest. Comprehensive examinations require additional coursework and a minimum of six hours of examinations.

Our graduate students attend academic and professional conferences and are encouraged to present both academic and applied communication research. CMST graduate students have presented papers to the Speech Communication Association, International Communication Association, Western States Communication Association, and American Society for Training and Development. Graduates have been placed in such top-rated doctoral programs as Purdue University, Southern Illinois University, the University of Texas, Austin, and the University of Iowa. Others have chosen professional careers in human resource development and public relations and teaching at the junior college level.

Chico State is an excellent environment for advanced study. Located near the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California, it is equidistant from San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. Furthermore, the College occupies one of the campus's newest and most technically advanced buildings; Tehama Hall has computer laboratories for majors and offices for graduate teaching associates.
