Yeah, it is. "Gauss" means the attraction between magnets. You, sir, have played too much fallout or STALKER.

You'll shoot your eye out, kid.

@grimelab doesn't the rubber absorb some of the energy,?

@CrashPlague cuz the cant possibly get past 10 feet per second? lol get worried when they start making a coil type magnetic accelerator.. :-) The navy got one that fire a projectile through 4 feet of concrete.. lol be afraid they don't point it our way

@Geccola They can make some crazy shit happen, but sadly the MAN hasn't invested in this kind of thing. YET. I think.

I actually found rubber-coated magnets that transfer the kinetic energy much better, and also don't break once you get above ~15 stages.

how do the ball bearings get from one side of the magnet to the others?
ArmadaWraith 3 years ago
The magnet pulls the bearing from the left, and kicks off the 2nd bearing on the right. With each stage, the bearings gain more and more momentum.

lol, I saw the nail hanging there off the steel ball on the end, and I was like, This isn't gonna end too good......
lol, it would be a good idea if you could give the projectile some sort of direction (with a pseudo barrel perhaps?)
Sigh, why I am giving all those kids out there reading this ideas?

Yeah. I experimented with that, but the nail has no spin so it basically tumbles. A fun modification is to stick about 10 smaller nails in place of a single large nail. They scatter like a shotgun.
