  • I was half expecting a penguin to walk out...

  • I use both Linux and Windows. Am on Linux right now, actually, but the fact of the matter is if you have work to do, Windows is better. I can't get the Adobe Creative Suite to run on Linux, so for ME it cannot be a serious operating system. I need those tools. Also the latest Ubunu isn't as stable as it was in the past. Had lots of trouble just getting the printer to work. Windows 7 has given me few problems. It's a bit slower but the programs I need run on it and it doesn't crash.

  • @joaorstm Eh yes there is, to make people buy the more expensive product? It's called marketing ;) just kidding (or not). I've never hit those limitations, mostly due to my lack of using Windows. But do you really think it would be even remotely possible to explain all this to a person who actually buys a copy of Windows named "Starter"? In the end to change this is most likely just editing the registry (though this it's not legal)

  • @LongJohnOlsen Even if there was a valid reason not to support PAE (and there is none), there are versions of Windows XP, Vista and 7 with completely arbitrary limitations on available memory. XP Starter: 512MB, Vista Starter: 1GB, 7 Starter: 2GB.

The ability to use more than 4GB exists in all versions of x86 Windows since XP, but is kept locked away from users for no good reason.

Linux can use up to 64GB of memory on x86 systems with PAE.

PAE is a *hardware* feature that exists since 1995.

  • @joaorstm the limit of 4 GB RAM is caused by hardware, not the OS! All 32 bit computers OS able to handle +4GB is called PAE (Physical Address Extension), in the good old days PAE would only be useful to servers not PCs, as PAE was a temporary software solution (PAE tend to slow memory a bit). I don't like MS either, but PAE has nothing to do with MS. As ALL 32 bit computers, apple, linux and MS is affected by this limit! The maximum limit for a modern 'ideal' 64 bit CPU is 16 exabytes

  • This is my utilization of mammoth idioms comment.

  • Arch linux is the most simple operating system. Simple does not equal easy. Try arch linux, you will see what i mean.

  • @sd9800 Yeah, hmm, I don't really see how you got "communist" from my comment but if you mean that they are very closed-mouth and a bit stand-offish when it comes to their technology development then yes, they are communist.

  • @ctsincebay so what ur saying is apple is communist? lol
