We first put him in a crate with a litterbox attached outside the door and all encased in chicken wire; he had no choice but to pee/poo there and when he did we rewarded him. Then we gradually moved it away from the crate. When we knew he had to go, we would not let him out until he went, and praised him when he did. In two months, he was fully trained. Pee was easier to train for than poo. Scoopable cat litter is the best!
I just use a normal cat litter box with scoopable cat litter. My dog goes pee or poo on request, and whenever he needs to. For poo, I pick it up with toilet paper and flush it down the toilet.
